Building More Resilient HEIs in Mindanao: The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Experience during the Pandemic
The Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic during the summer of 2021, which resulted in a significant increase in student enrollment, academic staff, and administrative staff. The AdZU implemented a variety of strategies to mitigate the spread of the epidemic, including online learning, technology integration, and community collaboration. During the Pandemic, the faculty, administrators, and staff of the university were able to adapt to the online set-up and the use of educational technology as a means to facilitate flexible learning. Among these, faculty and staff were the key players in ensuring the stability of the institution during the crisis. The research findings of this study highlight the importance of continuing capacity building of students, faculty, and administrators, as well as the need to continuously nurture personal growth and responsibility, cooperation and collective accountability, shared trust in the system and people, monitoring and enforcement of protocols and sanctions, coordination and partnerships with local government, and expanding networks with health-related and other agencies for risk reduction and disaster readiness, as these are drivers and key factors of the AdzU resilience.
